The most exciting aspect of the New Year is that it is unknown, like a lovely gift waiting to be unwrapped and enjoyed. Tonight, and in the early weeks of January, we think: "What could it be?" As the year unfolds, we find out. The year takes on its own shape and flavor, characterizing it in our minds and lives as we go along.
From what I observe, not many people will be sad to see 2008 vanish. President-elect Obama smartly saw that and sold us 2009 as the year of change. We'll see.
For now, in this shimmering moment, when the world is bubbling with possibility, I make my New Year's Resolution. I resolve to communicate passionately, for positive results that uplift and encourage, that support wholesome and noble endeavors, and that bring joy and love to the people it is my privilege to embrace with my words.
To you and to those you hold dear, Happy New Year! May God bless each of us and all of us as we unwrap this precious gift of a shining new year.
